Golf: Tips To Prevent Pain
Golf is a popular sport especially in the summer months. However, did you know that the swinging motion alone can put a lot of stress on the lower back? At Body Care Health & Chiropractic we see quite a few golfers of all skill levels. Consider the rotation stress that one swing creates in the back and then multiply that by how many swings you take in a whole game - it’s not surprising that back pain from golf is so common.
Here are some tips for how to keep you out on the fairway and prevent back pain;
1. Know your skill level and don’t push yourself too hard
Like any new challenge and sport we take on we all would love to be highly skilled straight away, although this rarely is the case. Take time to practice and learn the correct swinging techniques. Don’t push yourself to the limit, ease into playing.
2. Take your weight into consideration
If you are carrying some extra weight particularly on your stomach area, the pressure placed on your spine during the swinging motion will be increased. Always be proactive about your weight and health. Work on building your core strength and try to activate it while playing.
3. Stretch before and after playing
Warming up with 5 minutes of stretching will get your body feeling loose and ready to play. It will help your joints and also muscles prepare for the movements and actions about to come. Warming down with again 5 minutes of stretching will help your body with recovery.
4. Drink plenty of water
It can be a long, hot day out in the sun so make sure you remember to drink plenty of water. Your whole body will greatly appreciate this!
